Samuel Lipscomb Shapard (Sam) passed away on May 28, 2017 at the age of 88 while visiting his family in Colorado. Sam was born on September 19, 1928, in Griffin, Georgia. After graduating from Griffin High School, Sam attended the University of Georgia, where he earned a degree in Marketing in 1951. After graduation, Sam enlisted in the Air Force and served for four years. While stationed in Enid, OK, Sam met Suzanne Jones, the love of his life. After a brief courtship, they were married in 1953 and immediately left for Germany where they lived for two years while Sam served there. After returning home, Sam and Suzanne relocated to Rome, GA where they founded Roman Chemical Corporation.

Sam was an active and dedicated member of First United Methodist Church and the Adult Fellowship class. He was a member of the Rome Rotary Club. Sam served in leadership positions at the YMCA, the Board of Equalization and the Rome City Voting Polls. Family and friends who participated on the Rome YMCA Swim Team will always remember and appreciate his many years of dedication and service to the team.

Sam will forever be remembered by loved ones and friends for his friendly, kind, warm, humble, and joyful demeanor. He exemplified what it is to be a gentleman, and he treated everyone he met with the same level of interest and respect. Sam adored spending time with his family, and he will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his children, Mark (Renee) of Aurora, CO, Carol (Scott) Rees of Atlanta, GA, and Van (Christine) of Denver, CO and grandchildren, Spencer (Julia Bowen), Chandler, Samantha, Sarah, and Catharine.

A memorial service was held Saturday, June 24th at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church in Rome, GA, with The Rev. Dr. Robert C. Brown officiating.
